SCAD SERVE DESIGN FOR GOOD
LOGLINE
Frame by Frame is a visually textured animated short about a father and son who come to realize that a chair, built by nature, can not only bring them closer together but change their lives for a more people and planet-friendly future.
SYNOPSIS
Frame by Frame is a mixed-media animated short that reimagines how an old industry can discover a new path forward. At its heart, it’s the story of a father, a son, and a chair—one built by nature—that not only brings them closer together but also reveals the possibility of a more sustainable, people- and planet-friendly future.
The film opens inside a factory assembly line, where a chair is discarded for a minor “imperfection.” Cast aside by the factory owner, the chair tumbles down a trash chute and lands in the natural world, where it’s discovered by a young boy at play. With curiosity and innocence, he offers the broken piece back to nature. Nature transforms the chair into a new form—bridging the silent divide between the boy and his father, the factory owner, and revealing the power of stewardship over disposability.
Visually, the film incorporates real textures from sustainable fabrics and innovative furniture materials already available to manufacturers, grounding its story in present-day possibilities. Conceived as both a cinematic narrative and an immersive projection-mapped installation, Frame by Frame is designed as an environmental think-piece and educational tool.
This film was produced in just 10 weeks by 12 SCAD students — many of whom had no multimedia experience, and only one of whom was an animation major — as part of a SCAD Serve Design for Good class in collaboration with Meno Home Studios and the Good Future Design Alliance. Frame by Frame is a testament to creativity, collaboration, and the urgency of reimagining industry for future generations.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Frame by Frame began as a simple story about a father and son, but soon unfolded into something much more profound — a reflection on our relationship with nature and how design can reconnect us to it. The idea of a “chair built by nature” became a metaphor for sustainability, care, and legacy — something passed down not only through generations, but through our environment itself. At its core, the film is about rediscovering balance — between people and planet, tradition and innovation, simplicity and imagination. Watching the father and son’s bond evolve alongside the growth of this chair felt like witnessing nature’s wisdom come alive in human form.
But Frame by Frame wasn’t just the discovery of a genuine story — it was also the discovery of a genuine method to tell one. What began as a group of students entering a class with a 10-week mission to create an animated film became an exploration of collaboration, creativity, and voice. We were a mix of interior designers, illustrators, motion designers, producers, graphic designers, and even a fibers student — but not a single animator. My goal as a director was to ensure everyone’s strengths shaped the film equally, turning our limitations into our language. The result was a non-conventional, mixed-media film — blending live action, fibers, 2D, and 3D animation — that feels raw, honest, and deeply human. The process itself became a metaphor for sustainability: nothing wasted, everything with purpose. It reminded us that storytelling, when built with care and curiosity, can bridge not just disciplines — but people, ideas, and the planet itself.

PRODUCER’S STATEMENT
Frame by Frame is an animated short film created by 12 students from SCAD Savannah as part of the SCAD SERVE Design for Good course. Developed in collaboration with Meno Home Studios and its nonprofit partner, the Good Future Design Alliance (GFDA), the project explores the environmental and health impacts of fast manufacturing and throwaway culture.
SCAD SERVE Design for Good - SCAD SERVE empowers SCAD students, faculty, and staff to make meaningful contributions through intentional initiatives that improve quality of life for our communities. Design for Good courses are one such example. The 10-week courses are collaborations between SCAD SERVE and selected nonprofit organizations who have a particular challenge that they cannot effectively solve themselves, likely requiring creative exploration and innovative design thinking. A strategically chosen SCAD faculty member leads the students enrolled in the class as if they are a project team of junior design consultants, thereby driving resolution for the nonprofit organization and providing invaluable real-world experience for the students.
Good Future Design Alliance - The GFDA is a non-profit whose mission is to raise the public consciousness around the problem of construction industry waste, its contribution to climate change and to human health concerns. The GFDA works with a cross section of design and build professionals on solutions to increase the adoption of more circular and regenerative practices.
Meno Home Studios is a Denver-based furniture and lighting design studio dedicated to accelerating positive change in the industry. With a mission to connect design with innovation—reducing waste, toxins, and carbon is central to shaping a more sustainable future. Founded by SCAD alum Jerri Hobdy, Meno Home includes special projects under Meno Studios, led by Emmy Award-winning Stephanie Tomasky, to extend its impact beyond design. In addition to designing and bringing to market beautiful and clean furnishings, Meno Home Studios leads outreach, education, and impact-driven programs in collaboration with nonprofits, educators, and industry leaders—bridging creativity, responsibility, and meaningful change.

“As a SCAD alum myself, it was so nice to return to my alma mater to work with top talent that will be emerging into a variety of creative fields. The whole goal of this project was to begin bringing a broader awareness to the furniture industry and its impacts on all of us. Is a small way, the making of the film with ZERO Furniture Design majors really exampled how this seemingly niche industry does in fact touch all of our lives. Once we presented the facts, the students were absolutely impassioned to share our hope for a better furniture future”. - Jerri Hobdy
